Yesterday marked the official opening of the Smart Mobility Living Lab (SMLL) in London. The SMLL has been designed and built by a consortium of world-leading organisations, led by our clients TRL, and is Europe’s most advanced urban testbed for demonstrating and evaluating the use, performance, safety and benefits of connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) technology.
To help showcase the SMLL, TRL commissioned Agility3 to enhance an existing Woolwich Arsenal environment Digital Twin and develop a Virtual Reality (VR) application that provides the users with a realistic experience of being transported around the public roads of the SMLL in a CAV to demonstrate the virtual testing capabilities available.
Fully immersed within the virtual environment through use of a VR headset, the user begins the experience seated in the drivers’ seat of the Nissan e-NV200 CAV which is situated within the SMLL CAV garage. From here, the Nissan begins its automated navigation, transporting the user out of the garage following a route around a highly realistic and accurate virtual Royal Arsenal in Greenwich before pulling back into the CAV garage.
We are delighted that we’ve been able to support this brilliant, innovative project and provide the public with a glimpse into the future that the SMLL is working to realise.
Jonathan Clark, Integration Engineer for the SMLL, said of the project:
“The Agility3 VR application is an accurate digital twin of the SMLL testbed. We intend to use this application to complement our existing digital twin assets, allowing us to offer virtual reality trials and showcase the digital twin and the SMLL testbed to our customers. In addition, simulation will play an important role in CAV development and system validation to reduce overall development costs. This digital environment can be an important enabler to validating systems using simulation. It was a pleasure working with the Agility3 team on this project.”
