In support of a recent bid for a high value contract to update a large section of a major road, our client, an industry leader in the delivery of major rail and highway infrastructure projects, worked with Agility3 to develop a bespoke interactive 4D visualisation application to help their prospective customer to understand and visualise the proposed plans for the construction.
The delivered interactive 4D application was built bespoke to the specific requirements of the client. With many different construction activities scheduled to take place across a large site, over a number of years and in close proximity to residential areas, our client wanted to provide their prospective customer with a means of bringing the complex construction plans to life, making them easier to understand and making it clear how those plans would impact residents and surrounding areas. Having discussed with our team how interactive visualisation applications could achieve this and having seen examples of our previous work, our client chose to work with us to deliver this solution.
As the construction project was planned to take place over 5 years, a key requirement for our client was that they wanted their prospective customer to be able to see how the site would change over time and what construction activities would be taking place on any one day. Therefore, it was crucial that some sort of 4D functionality should be built into the application. Agility3 were able to achieve this by integrating intuitive timeline, calendar and Play/Pause features which enable the end user to easily visualise the progress of the development throughout the project lifecycle.
Another crucial requirement was that our client wanted to make it clear how their construction activities would impact on the traffic flow along the roads in the area. To achieve this, Agility3 implemented traffic flow indicators along the roads which update automatically as the timeline progresses, to illustrate how the traffic flows would be maintained throughout the project.
Data played a key part in this project with our client providing various data including 2D and 3D BIM data in the form of CAD, as well as construction sequences, notes on the construction phases and more. Agility3 were able to quickly understand how all the different data pieced together and were able to translate that information into the interactive 4D application which made it all very simple to understand for the end user.
The end user has consistently been central to the design and development of the interactive 4D visualisation application. It has been developed to be simple to navigate, with an intuitive User Interface and with built-in functionality that makes it easy to visualise where and when all aspects of construction are taking place.
A big factor in achieving this was regular contact with our clients BIM team and feedback on the application development as it progressed. The BIM Development Manager for our client said:
“It was a pleasure working with the Agility3 team on this complex project. The goal was to produce a 4D interactive visualisation to allow the end user to simply understand the complex technical build sequence. From day one, the team’s proposal clearly outlined the data responsibilities which avoided any misinterpretation. Agility3’s detailed approach to project management ensured that they were able to adapt to our build programme changes, some of which were last minute. The final output certainly exceeded our expectations and Agility3 implemented some excellent touches in terms of the user interface. I wouldn’t hesitate to work with the team again.”
